The Stinking Rose

Is there really much to complain about, when you’re at a venue in Beverly Hills? The one drawback, if I had to come up with one, is that it’s off of La Cienega. So, while there is valet (“What’s the point? Everywhere in LA has valet?”) On busy nights, when there is a line to get in to the car park you will be blocking traffic on a major street.

The restaurant is dimly lit and quite bohemian. I don’t really care for the layout, because it feels like a maze. Then again, it’s just a matter of preference. Again, on busy nights the “lobby” gets rather crowded and getting to and from the restroom is quite a challenge.

I will note that there is a section of “lover’s booths” that are perfect for date night.

As a vegan, there isn’t much to choose from at this venue. I was here for a birthday, so of course I had to make do. Here are your options (don’t forget to mention that you’re vegan so that they don’t add any of the butter or cheese)

  • Baked Portobello Mushroom with vegetables, garlic mashed potatoes
  • chilled asparagus
  • garlic fries
  • Regular Salad
  • Panzanella Salad
  • Roasted Garlic Bulb
  • Steamed Vegetables
  • Lasagna (sans cheese) this is a hit or miss depending on if they are able to make it to order
  • Gnochetti no gorgonzola
  • Angel Hair Pasta with Tomato
I opted for the pasta, because I had run 18 miles so I was craving something more than a salad. It was ok, nothing special. I did dig into the garlic fries that someone else ordered and those were rather delicious.
Everyone else raved about their food. It was good, just not amazing.
Note: You MUST try the Garlic Ice Cream – at least once

Everyone was rather friendly the entire time. Despite the fact that we had a large group, everything came out correctly and at the same time. The server was great about splitting the check and making sure that we had everything we needed during the entire time.

Here’s the bad – we arrived early, so while we waited for the group to get there, my two friends and I waited in the lounge area. It has a very classy vibe with a live piano player. The problem was we sat at the bar and were ignored for about 15 minutes. The bar was not that busy, and people that arrived after us kept getting served. Finally, someone who arrived after us told the bartender to take care of us first. This was highly irritating. We finished our drinks, and the bartender did not come back and ask if we wanted another. Not cool.
