El Cholo

Mexican food in California is only second to Mexican food in Mexico. El Cholo is a Los Angeles Mexican Food Staple. This is a family owned chain that traces its roots to the 1920’s. The name itself has historical significance for California Mexicans. So interesting, in fact, that there is a timeline on the restaurant’s website describing just this.

Any way, like many California staples. Resident Angelenos tend to forget or under appreciate about places that we have in our backyards.

Of course, many branches have opened since the founding of this chain. This particular review is for the Downtown Los Angeles (Staples Center) location. My date and I had dinner here prior to going to watch the Lakers Game

Venue:

This location is centrally located a few blocks away from the L.A. Convention Center, Staples Center, and Nokia Center. This is a smaller location. The best way to describe it would be rectangular shaped. It is very long, not very wide, with a bunch of tables cramped in.  There is, however, bar seating and tables.

Keep in mind that this location will get super busy, when there’s an event or show going on. People love coming here for pre & post event drinks. Be prepared for a long wait and to “fight” for seating.

Food:

The food at this location, and the others that I’ve been to, was good. Great portion size- good enough to make two meals out of each entree. Specific to this location, I had the veggie fajitas.

Originally – roasted bell peppers, onion, and tomato (I believe), guacamole, sour cream, cheese, and tortillas, rice and beans
Vegan Version – no sour cream or cheese ask them not to use butter and ask for black beans.

They were very accommodating. The food was seasoned well some times fajitas can be too salty, but not here. It comes out in a hot skillet still sizzling.

Service:

Considering how busy it was, service was great. Our order was taken right away and our food came out very quickly. Most importantly, our order was correct. We got the check quickly – not in the feeling rushed manner. She was very friendly and attentive.

Overall we had a great experience.
